Enhanced 28X Bus Service
ABOUT THIS PROJECT

In response to a request made by elected officials from the project corridor, MassDOT submitted a letter to the United States Department of Transportation in November asking that the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant application for the 28X project be withdrawn. Although MassDOT is no longer pursuing this proposal, the information on this website will remain as a public resource. Any announcements about future planning efforts in this corridor will be posted here as well.

Route 28X Bus Enhancements Project

More than $115 Million in Federal Stimulus Funds is Being Sought to Improve MBTA Bus Service Between Mattapan Square and Ruggles Station

The Executive Office of Transportation, in conjunction with the MBTA, is applying for a Federal stimulus grant to dramatically improve public transit service in the MBTA Route 28 Bus corridor.

Features of the project include:
An exclusive busway on Blue Hill Avenue between Washington Street and Mattapan Square, which would allow buses to travel unimpeded by vehicular traffic.
A bus-only lane southbound on Warren Street from just south of Dudley Station to Quincy Street.
State-of-the art, fully accessible transit stations featuring heated shelters, CharlieCard vending machines, landscaping, and lighting.
Upgraded traffic signals with better coordination, computerized management, and bus-priority controls
60-foot articulated buses with three doors.
Fewer stops along the route.

By transforming the current MBTA Route 28 into the 28X, riders will be able to more easily and more quickly connect to more than a dozen bus routes at Dudley and Ruggles Stations, as well as to the Orange and Red Lines.

This project has the potential to serve as a national model for upgrading bus service, spurring economic growth, and improving overall transportation conditions in densely developed urban neighborhoods.

Public meetings for the project began in May and will continue into September. If MassDOT receives the Federal funding for this project, additional public meetings will be scheduled during the design and construction phases of the project.
