Overview
This polygon datalayer contains the 16 regional transit authorities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A regional transit authority provides and coordinates cost-effective and safe transportation options for commuters. Click here to see if your town is part of a regional transit authority!
Each RTA other than the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is represented by one polygon. Three separate polygon layers contain the MBTA district representing the three assessment districts. The three MBTA boundary layers are as follows:
- MBTA Highest Assessment Area: Inner core with the most amount of MBTA service.
- MBTA Secondary Assessment Area: Between inner core and adjacent RTA districts with service available.
- MBTA Other Served Area: Outer fringe of district with many towns overlapping with other RTAs.
In addition, there is a polygon layer called Non_RTACoveredTowns that contains the municipalities that do not pay into any RTA district.
Production
The bounds of the regional transit authorities were digitized from the MassGIS survey-level town boundaries.
