Overview

This arc datalayer contains ferry routes within Massachusetts. This layer denotes if a ferry route transports freight and/or passengers as well as whether or not it is part of the National Highway System (NHS). The seasonal operation of the ferry route is also provided in this layer.

Production

The locations of the ferry routes were digitized from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1:5000 color orthophoto imagery and from the NOAA Raster Navigational Charts.

TYPE

The type of ferry service that uses the ferry route:
comm = commuter service
pass = passenger service
pass/v = passenger and vehicle service

OPERATOR

Name of operator using the ferry route

SERVICE

Denotes when the ferry route is active

NHS

Denotes whether or not a route is part of the NHS:
N = the route is not part of the NHS.

ROUTE

Provides the towns connected by the ferry route

RTE_NUM

Route number defined by the MBTA
