Grand Junction Commuter Rail Feasibility Public Meeting
MassDOT invites all interested stakeholders to a community meeting to discuss progress on the Grand Junction Commuter Rail Feasibility Study. The meeting will be held as follows:
Thursday, June 16, 6:30pm-8:00pm
The purpose of this meeting is to discuss an ongoing study of the potential use of the Grand Junction Railroad for supplemental MBTA Commuter Rail service to Cambridge and North Station.
Green Line Extension: June Workshops

We wanted to take the opportunity to update you on the dates and locations of the upcoming Station Design Workshops. Please note that some of the information has changed since the original announcement. These workshops will provide you with an opportunity to participate in the design of the future Green Line Extension stations in a hands-on, interactive way. MBTA: Talbot Avenue Station Groundbreaking
Governor Deval Patrick this week joined Congressman Michael Capuano, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and state and local officials to announce the groundbreaking for the $15.9 million Talbot Commuter Rail Station, as part of the MBTA Fairmount Commuter Rail Line Rehabilitation Project. The project will create an estimated 120 jobs, with project completion scheduled for 2013.
Talbot Avenue Station marks the third of four commuter rail stations under construction as part of the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line Rehabilitation Project. Similar to the Four Corners/Geneva station presently under construction, the Talbot Avenue Station will include new high level platforms, canopies, passenger shelters, benches and windscreens, and electronic message signs. Sidewalks adjacent to the station will be reconstructed with new wheelchair ramps at major intersections.
The Talbot Avenue and Woodrow Avenue railroad bridges will be replaced in conjunction with the project in late 2011. The 9.2 mile Fairmount Commuter Rail Line runs from South Station through Dorchester and Hyde Park terminating in the Readville. It is the only MBTA Commuter Rail Line that exclusively serves the City of Boston.
Launched in 2005, Phase I of the Fairmount Commuter Rail Rehabilitation Project is complete, including the rehabilitation of Upham's Corner and Morton stations and bridges reconstruction and improvements. Phase II involves the construction of four new commuter rail stations with three of four station projects now underway: Four Corners/Geneva, slated for completion in 2012; Talbot Avenue Station; and Newmarket Station. The fourth, Blue Hill Avenue Station, to be located in Mattapan, is currently in design.
Medford I-93: 1st Weekend Bridge Replacement This Weekend
Work crews will undertake the second of a series of rapid bridge superstructure replacements on I-93 in Medford beginning on Friday, June 10th at 8:00 PM and continuing through Monday, June 13th at 5:00 AM. This weekend’s location involves the bridges on I-93 north over Route 60 (Salem Street).
Throughout the course of the weekend, traffic on I-93 will be limited to two lanes in each direction over a 6-mile segment between Exit 28 (Sullivan Square) in Somerville and Exit 36 (Montvale Avenue) in Stoneham. Traffic on I-93 north will be directed through a median crossover near the Somerville/Medford line and then travel in counter-flow operation on the southbound barrel of the highway before traveling through a second median crossover near Spot Pond in Stoneham. I-93 directional traffic will be separated by a moveable “zipper lane” barrier. Access to and from many of the ramps on I-93 north in this area will be restricted.
The $98.1 million project to replace these fourteen bridge superstructures in Medford is funded through the Patrick-Murray Administration’s historic Accelerated Bridge Program, a $3 billion recovery effort to reduce the Commonwealth’s backlog of structurally-deficient bridges
Traffic is expected to be heavy throughout the duration of the weekend, particularly during daytime and early evening hours. MassDOT strongly recommends drivers that do not have a destination in the Medford/Downtown Boston area use alternate routes [I-495, I-95 (Route 128), Route 1 and I-90] to avoid the construction area.

Worcester CSX Facility Boosts Commuter Rail
Governor Deval Patrick and Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray this week joined state and local officials and CSX Transportation to celebrate the start of construction of the $100 million expansion of CSX’s rail facility in Worcester. The groundbreaking marks an important milestone in the comprehensive multi-year rail transportation agreement between the Commonwealth and CSX, designed to expand commuter rail service, strengthen the state’s transportation infrastructure, and improve the Commonwealth’s competitive position in the global economy.
The project will create more than 450 jobs for Massachusetts, including an estimated 380 construction jobs and 80 long-term positions once the facility opens.
The project will lead to the development of a state-of-the-art ‘green’ terminal that will provide more shipping options for Massachusetts and New England businesses. This new terminal will create more options for commuters and increased trains along the Worcester / Framingham line to Boston’s South Station.
Lt. Governor Murray, who has been working on this agreement since he was Mayor of Worcester, led the negotiations for this agreement on behalf of the Administration with critical support from U.S. Senator John Kerry, and Congressman McGovern.
Through the agreement, finalized in 2009, the Commonwealth purchased the property rights of the Boston to Worcester rail line from CSX, to accommodate increased freight and passenger service along the rail, while also taking control of dispatching and maintenance on the line. The MBTA has already been able to add five Framingham-Boston commuter trains to Worcester on CSX’s Boston line.
The transaction also allowed for the state to purchase the New Bedford-Fall River Line from CSX, as well as the Boston Terminal track and West First Street Yard in South Boston. The acreage required for the expansion was acquired by CSX through direct negotiation with the land owners.
MassDOT July Public Meeting
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors will hold its next regular public business meeting on Wednesday, July 13, 1:00pm, MBTA Board Room, Suite 3910, State Transportation Building, Boston.
The MBTA Board will meet first at 1pm, followed by the MassDOT Board. All meetings are open to the public.
